The Movements around the World project was designed to let us the students learn about any movement in world history that we wanted. At the Begining of the project, my friend Andrea came up and asked me If I wanted to work with her, and of course I said yes. She did have one condition to this deal though, she got to choose our movement. That is how we ended up with the Coco Chanel fashion movement. Researching this movement was suprisingly fun and very easy due to the popularity of Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel is actually responsible for many key inventions in fashion and she has a beatiful story coming from a really hard background. Coco actually has a foundation that is still active and healthy, this was a super useful resource for me because it is directly from the source.
For this project we had to do 2 artificats as a group from a list of 8 possibilies. These possibilites ranged from art to music and there were many different choices. Ultimately, Andrea and I decided that she should design a dress very similar to Coco's LBD(little black dress), and I decided that it would be funny and challenging to make a mini rap album with remixed songs about Coco Chanel. I thought that it would be very challenging and funny to create this product, and I knew in the process of writing these songs I would learn a lot more about Coco Chanel.
At the end of the project, all of the groups presented their movements to the entire class. It was cool to here about and see the difference in how movements happened in different time periods. I learned a lot about mnay other movements but I remember most about the Berlin Wall and Hippie movements.
Another huge part of this project was essay writing. For the project requirements each group was responsible for 2 4 page essays or one 8 page essay about your movement. Andrea and I decided to do 2 4 page essays. My thesis was that Coco Chanel was and still is the most influential figure in modern fashion. I learned a lot about using strong facts to back up evidence as well as to work in fluency in my research writing.
As a small bonus at the end of the project, we took a field trip to Balboa Park, where we got the choice to visit one of two museums. The Muesuem of Art, or the Museum of Man. I chose to visit the Museum of Man, Because I heard about there knew exhbit on Cannibalism and wanted to see that badly. The field trips were meant to give us the opportunity to learn more about out movements, and just generally explore more about different events in history.
I am incredibly proud of my partner and my work for this project. We both crafted well though out essays about the importance of Coco Chanel, we both made really strong products with or own twist in them, and we worked super hard in the process of this project.
